Knights Win!

59-7-2-0 during the regular season, a 31-game undefeated streak, countless other records, the first OHL Championship in the team's 40-year history, 3-0 during tournament round robin play, and now, la pièce de résistance for Canadian junior hockey, the Memorial Cup.

The London Knights took out superstar Sidney Crosby and the QMJHL champion Rimouski Océanic 4-0 in the Cup final, at tournament host London's John Labatt Centre.

London's top player, and OHL regular season and playoff MVP Corey Perry also took the Memorial Cup MVP, scoring 7 points in 4 games. A Mastercard representative presented the trophy, "Corey, on behalf of Mastercard Canada, thank you for a 'priceless' tournament." Oy. Perry was roughed up throughout the game, including a ridiculous sucker punch in between play by Eric Neilson, which led to a two-man powerplay, and the first goal of the game.

It was a fun game to watch as a London native, and by default, a bit of a Knights fan. The announcers even made a Ric Flair reference, first stating "To be the best, you've gotta beat the best" , then correcting themselves, replacing "best" with the proper "man". (Wooo!)

I'm still not the biggest Knights or hockey fan, but it's good to see this kind of success for the city. It's also nice for my dad, who does follow the Knights, and has for years. He got to go to the first game of the round robin (also against Rimouski) with my aunt Sharon, who works for the Ottawa 67's, the OHL representative in the event. (The host team is in automatically, and Ottawa were runners-up in the OHL finals.)

Now all that needs to happen is for the NHL owners and players to get their acts together so some of these guys can impress on a grander scale.
